Check out this short list of articles to gain more knowledge on the importance of family engagement, and how to turn it into a reality in your classroom:

“The power of communication and community engagement utilized by teachers to actively involve parents and guardians in the educational process of their children is essential to the growth of the students.” A child knows when his/her teacher does not have a relationship with their teacher and when their parent isn’t informed about their schooling. It usually affects their success in school. The socioeconomic status does have an effect and needs to be taken into consideration, but should never affect how communication is handled. We cannot assume parents know how to help their child, however we need to empower them to be partners in this process. Parents are the first role models for their children and need to show them the importance of educational success. “When schools work together with families to support learning, children tend to succeed not just in school, but throughout life.”

This article discussed the topic of disadvantaged students and how important communication between the schools and families is a vital part, especially for them. Students do not only learn from coming to school every day, they are learning at home and within the community. Although the research says how important family engagement and communication is, many schools are not putting it into practice. Disadvantaged students are at an even greater risk to not do well in school and tend to have families who struggle with poverty and not knowing how to help their child. Teachers are frustrated by the responsibility to help these disadvantaged students without the support of the parents. Many times, however, these disengagement we perceive has nothing to do with engagement and more to do with lacking knowledge. Parents can be a huge help if we are clear about what they need to do to help their child.

This paper discusses the importance of family involvement in a child’s education and the use of technology to accomplish it. Barack Obama stated, “Family engagement raises student achievement regardless of the parents’ education level, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background.” Communication is a vital part of parent engagement. Parents know more about their children than anyone else. The study evaluates new technologies, especially social media, and how they are helping the aid of communicating with families. They are some challenges, and it is important to have a balanced approach to technology use. Every family has different needs and different accessibility to technology.

This article discussed Seesaw specifically and all the features it offers. Seesaw is student friendly and serves as a portfolio to document their work and progress while sharing it with the class, their teacher, and families. Seesaw makes learning authentic, providing an instant audience and purpose to their work.

5. Stellar, A. (2014). Diversity Communications Toolkit: A Guide to Diversity Communications/Engagement in Education. Journal of School Public Relations, 35 (1)

Many schools need to diversify their engagement. Families have diverse populations they need to adhere to. This article discusses a book in which schools can use to help this issue. There are 5 chapters to provide information to schools about how to improve their engagement styles to improve their communication with families.

The Use of Seesaw: Reflections

Read on to hear how implementing Seesaw went in my classroom: Week 1 Implementation Reflection Week 1 Experiences: Students have been using Seesaw to access learning activities during math rotations. Students watch teacher created videos to walk them through a 3 act task and math problem. Students use the iPads to take photos of their work and post to their journals. Students are having an easier time accessing the website, activities, and videos the more I model and the more they practice. I had planned to practice accessing Seesaw classwide this week, but there was a snow day, early out, and I was gone one day, so it did not happen. I think this would be useful, as some of my lower students have not yet grasped how to access or post. Along with the classwide practice, I had planned to introduce the expectation of posting one time per week. I have a class list printed off so students can put a tally next to their name after they post something. This will help them remember...
